In 1991, I learned that I was HIV+. Over the course of managing my disease, I've been blessed with a loving family, good friends, and a medical background. Many people aren't as fortunate, and need help to deal with the stigma and challenges associated with living with HIV. Housing Works offers this help to people in dire need. I'm seeking to raise $20,000 to support them and the amazing work they do on behalf of people living with HIV/AIDS.
This will be my 8th ride from Boston to NYC, so I know well the challenge of riding nearly 300 miles in 3 days. But I also know firsthand the challenge of living with HIV, and it is much more demanding. The ride ends, but life with HIV is ongoing. The ride is full of cameraderie and support, but for far too many people, living with HIV is lonely and isolating. These challenges are precisely the ones that Housing Works addresses. Housing Works is a healing community that provides housing, medical and mental health services, and advocacy on behalf of people living with HIV/AIDS.
But the hope that Housing Works brings goes beyond their services. For the first time since the epidemic began, we have the tools to end the AIDS crisis. Housing Works has provided unparalleled leadership to get New York State to adopt a plan that makes full use of those tools to end AIDS as an epidemic in the state by 2020. And it’s not just New York: the United Nations has established 2030 as its target date to bring global infection rates below epidemic levels.
These goals are backed by real science. But both the lifesaving services and epidemic-ending leadership provided by Housing Works depend on your support. Please support my ride, and help change the course of history.
Your generous donation supports Housing Works advocacy at the state, national, and international level. Donation are fully tax-deductible. If your company has a matching gift program, please multiply your gift by taking an extra moment to provide the information needed.
