Thank you for supporting our team - and Housing Works - as we ride 285 miles together to fight AIDS. As challenging as BRAKING AIDS® Ride will be, it's nothing compared to the daily struggle that people living with HIV face each day. Your donation will go right to work providing housing, medical and mental health services, and advocacy on behalf of people living with HIV/AIDS. Your generous donation is fully tax-deductible.

Team Isharo--what's with the name?  We came together in honor of Ira Shapiro who died of AIDS. He signed his paintings Isharo. Team Isharo is an incredible family within the larger Braking AIDS Ride family. Ira was Beth's brother. He died in 1987 three weeks after his diagnosis. He was not yet 25. AZT had just been approved for FDA testing.  There was no “cocktail”.  There was little, if any, hope. Since then over 1.2 million people in the US have been diagnosed with AIDS; 700,000 have died--35 million globally.

This will be our 15th ride. When Beth was planning to do her first ride in 1999, she told her dear friend Amy.  Amy said "count me in" and they have participated together ever since.  In 2004 cousin Norrie came into the picture to crew the ride, and with her came Kate, sometimes rider, sometimes crew.  And shortly thereafter cousin Andrea started to crew, later rode, and crewed and rode and crewed....  Jordan rode to honor his uncle 2 years ago and is back in the saddle again this year.  Andrea brought Steve last year--he is indispensible as moto (motorcycle) safety along the route.  And finally our newest member, Sydney, is on her bike for the first time this year to honor her uncle.

So here we are riding and crewing to celebrate Ira's life, cherish the memories we have of others we have lost, and work to change the future.

We can’t do this alone. We need your help and have set the goal high--$50,000 as a team.  Valerie Kort Kieffer, a childhood friend of Ira's made a $10,000 challenge grant and is looking to others to do the same.

Every donation counts—large and small.  How about matching Valerie’s $10,000? Or $5,000 $1,000, $500 or even $100.

If your company has a matching gift program, you can multiply your gift by taking an extra moment to provide the information needed.

Thank you for your support!
